Mattress Maintenance & Care

A well cared-for mattress will provide years of comfortable, supportive sleep. With a few simple habits, you can keep your child's mattress fresh, hygienic

and performing at its best.

Regular Care Routine

Establishing a simple maintenance routine will help your mattress stay comfortable and supportive throughout its lifetime. Here's what we recommend:

Rotate Regularly

Every 2-3 months

Rotate the mattress 180 degrees (head to foot) to ensure even wear. This helps prevent body impressions forming in one area and extends the mattress life considerably.

Flip if Double-Sided

Every 4-6 months

If your mattress is double-sided, flip it over twice a year in addition to rotating. This allows the comfort layers to recover and distributes wear evenly across both surfaces.

Air the Mattress

Weekly

When changing bedding, leave the mattress uncovered for a few hours if possible. This allows moisture to evaporate and fresh air to circulate through the air vents.

Vacuum the Surface

Monthly

Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust, dead skin cells and allergens from the mattress surface. Pay attention to seams and edges.

Protecting Your Mattress

A mattress protector creates a barrier against spills, stains, dust mites and allergens. It's a modest investment that protects the mattress and so extends the useful life of your mattress.

What to Look For in a Mattress Protector

  • Waterproof but breathable - protects against spills without trapping heat
  • Fitted sheet style for secure fit
  • Machine washable for easy care
  • Hypoallergenic materials to reduce allergen build-up
  • Quiet fabric that doesn't rustle during movement

For children especially, accidents happen. A waterproof protector means a quick change of bedding rather than a lengthy mattress cleaning process - and helps prevent moisture reaching the mattress core where it can cause damage and odours.

Dealing with Spills & Stains

Act quickly when accidents happen. The sooner you address a spill, the less likely it is to become a permanent stain or cause lasting damage.

1

Blot Immediately

Use clean, dry cloths to absorb as much liquid as possible. Press firmly but don't rub.

2

Clean Gently

Mix mild detergent with cold water. Dab the stain working from outside in.

3

Rinse & Blot

Use a clean damp cloth to remove soap residue, then blot dry again.

4

Dry Thoroughly

Allow to air dry completely. Use a fan or open window to speed up the process.

Important - What to Avoid

Never soak the mattress or use excessive water, as moisture trapped inside can lead to mould and mildew. Avoid harsh chemicals, bleach or enzyme cleaners as these can damage the fabric and fillings. Never use a steam cleaner on your mattress.

For Stubborn Odours

Bicarbonate of soda is your friend. Sprinkle a thin layer over the affected area, leave for several hours (or overnight if possible), then vacuum thoroughly. This naturally absorbs odours without introducing moisture or chemicals to the mattress.

Supporting Your Mattress

A mattress needs proper support to perform well and maintain its shape. The bed base plays an important role:

Slatted Bases

Ensure slats are evenly spaced. Hardwood slats provide consistent support and allow air to circulate beneath the mattress. Check periodically that no slats have shifted or become damaged.

Check Regularly

Inspect the bed frame and slats every few months. Tighten any loose bolts and ensure everything remains sturdy. A wobbly frame or sagging slats will affect mattress performance and comfort.

When to Replace Your Mattress

Even with excellent care, mattresses don't last forever. A quality spring interior mattress should provide 8-10 years of good service, though this varies with use. Watch for these signs that it may be time for a replacement:

Visible sagging - permanent indentations or dips that don't recover when the mattress is rotated

Lumps and bumps - uneven surface caused by internal components shifting or degrading

Noisy springs - creaking or squeaking that wasn't present before, indicating worn components

Waking discomfort - consistently waking with aches, stiffness or poor sleep quality

Children grow quickly, and their support needs change. Toddler mattresses may not be appropriate for an older child or teenager. Consider whether the mattress is still providing adequate support for your child's current size and weight.

Storage Tips

If you need to store a mattress temporarily (perhaps when transitioning between beds or during a house move), proper storage helps prevent damage:

Storing Your Mattress Safely

  • Store flat if possible - avoid standing on edge for extended periods as this can distort the internal structure
  • Use a breathable mattress bag to protect from dust and moisture while allowing air circulation
  • Keep in a dry, temperature-controlled environment - avoid damp garages or lofts with extreme temperatures
  • Never place heavy items on top of a stored mattress
  • If storing for more than a few weeks, consider rotating periodically

Quick Reference Care Schedule

Weekly

Air the mattress when changing bedding. Strip back covers for a few hours to allow moisture to evaporate.

Monthly

Vacuum the mattress surface using the upholstery attachment. Check for any stains that need attention. Inspect bed frame for loose fixings.

Every 2-3 Months

Rotate the mattress 180 degrees (head to foot). Deep clean the mattress protector. Check slats are properly positioned and undamaged.

Every 4-6 Months

Flip the mattress if double-sided. Treat with bicarbonate of soda for freshness. Thoroughly inspect for signs of wear or damage.
