How to create extra space in a child's small bedroom

We all know that kids accrue oodles of clutter. To them, of course, it’s not just clutter, it’s their imaginary world of dinosaurs, brilliant battle ships that sail the seas, magical kingdoms of foresty folk, and copious amounts of teddies for those all important picnics.

Whatever the toys or treasures, as their parents, we want to keep their rooms as tidy and functional as possible, and decrease the likelihood of their trinkets ending up all over the floor .

One of our most commonly asked questions is ‘how do I make more space in my kids’ room?’

And whilst we don’t have a magic wand to transform a compact bedroom to a capacious one, we do have some handy hints and tips on ways to add more room relatively easily and quickly…

  1. Choose neutral colours

Create a harmonious space by colour blocking with neutral tones. By using lighter paint colours on the walls and light tones elsewhere in the room, you will keep the bedroom feeling (and looking) bright and airy.

  1. Select space saving loft beds

When it comes to older children and teens in compact bedrooms, choosing a bed such as a loft bed or high sleeper will enable them to set up a whole living space underneath their sleeping space. Thus, saving precious floor and wall space in the rest of the room.

  1. Use the space under the bed

Trundles are your best friend if you have a single or double bed in their room. Choose a roll out trundle with a flat bottom to it so that you can use it as a giant drawer to stash unruly toys away (or a sleepover bed with the addition of a cosy mattress!)

  1. Choose combination wardrobes

If space is at a premium and you are looking for both hanging and folded clothing storage, combination robes are the way forward. They usually include a hanging rail with drawers underneath, so that your child has the best of both worlds!

  1. Look for upright ladders

When it comes to using bunk beds in smaller bedrooms, look for ladders that are fixed upright against the bed, rather than sloping into the room. This will alleviate floor space when it comes to climbing up to bed.

  1. Add a hideaway a desk

A roll out desk that can pull in and out from under a bed is ideal for saving space in a child’s bedroom. Options like mid sleeper beds often include beds that can hide away or be pulled out for studies.

  1. Pop on a hook on shelf

For upper bunk users, there may not be somewhere obvious to rest a bedtime drink or book. Why not opt for a hook on shelf to pop over the side rail. – Ideal for essential bedtime bits!

  1. Invest in multifunctional furniture

Day beds that convert into single beds, loft beds that include desks underneath and cabin beds with a collection of storage below are just a few ways to make the most of the bed that they have. Make their bed work hard; it’s sometimes worth investing that little bit extra for greater functionality in a smaller bedroom.

  1. Add a picture rail or shelf

NAUTICAL STYLE BUNK

Not only does this add a tasteful pop of interior design, but a wall shelf also adds precious storage – ideal for nooks and to sit above bunk beds too.

  1. Choose storage to add their own stamp

Open storage with cubby holes and bookcases allow for interesting totes and wicker baskets to be used. Personalising these can help bring colour and texture into the room, and really make the room special to your child. – Who knows, it may even encourage them to use the storage too!

Happy space saving! x
