How do I choose the right bed for my child?

As parents, you may have a number of questions and considerations when it comes to choosing the right bed for your child.

In this blog, we have broken down the various questions we are asked most frequently, to help you to narrow down your search for their perfect bed.

  1. Safety Features: Safety is a top priority for parents. Some ways to check the safety specifications on children’s beds, is to ensure that you purchase a bed from a children’s bed specialist. These brands will know the exact specification that their beds are designed and made to. If you are considering a high bed (a bunk bed, mid sleeper or high sleeper loft bed), these types of beds have extra safety considerations. All Little Folks Furniture high beds are tested in our very own testing rig, which bish, bash and boshes the beds to stress test them and ensure that they are safe and secure for everyday use. It is important to select a bed that is appropriate for your child’s age. We recommend age 6 and upwards for a high bed.
  2. Size and Comfort: The bed should be the right size for the child’s age and height, and it should provide a comfortable sleeping surface. It is also wise to think about the importance of the mattress for the bed. A specially specified child’s mattress that will fully support them in their sleep, is the most appropriate type for a child. We would recommend sprung interior mattresses instead of those with foam, as they are more breathable and durable.
  3. Durability and Quality: Parents often look for beds made from sturdy materials that can withstand the wear and tear of an active child. Look for bed frames crafted from solid hardwood timbers, as these will be stronger than beds made from softwoods like Pine. Another depiction of quality are beds crafted with proper joints, such as traditional mortice and tenon style.
  1. Design and Style: The bed’s design might need to fit with the overall decor of the child's room. Sticking to timeless, classic style beds will give the interior longevity, and it will mean that you can change out some of the accessories as the child gets older, without the need to also buy a completely new bed.

  1. Storage Options: Beds with built-in storage, such as drawers underneath, an extra bed underneath the bed (trundle), or handy hook on shelves for high beds are great ways to save space in a child’s room, and make their bedroom work harder. High sleeper beds and mid sleeper beds often have furniture options that can slot underneath the high bed.
  2. Ease of Assembly: Some parents prefer beds that are easy to assemble and disassemble, especially if they move frequently or need to rearrange the room. Good quality beds should include a minimal amount of fittings, and therefore should be straight forward to assemble.
  3. Budget: Cost is often a consideration. Parents often want to find a balance between quality and affordability, and we would always recommend investing in the best quality child’s bed that you can afford. Sign up to mailing lists to get Sale alerts, and look out for money off codes to get those extra little savings. Essentially though, as with many other things in life, you do get what you pay for.

  1. Health Concerns: Sometimes, parents are concerned about materials and finishes, ensuring they are non-toxic and hypoallergenic to protect their child’s health. It is a good idea to find out whether any painted finishes are non-toxic (ours all are at Little Folks!) and also look for beds that have been created from sustainably sourced timbers. If purchasing a mattress for your child, you could consider wool based mattresses, which are naturally hypoallergenic and do not use chemicals for fabric treatment.
  2. Mattress Compatibility: It is important to ensure that the chosen bed is compatible with a good quality mattress that provides proper support and comfort. The best way to do this is to consider purchasing a mattress from the same place as the bed. Here at Little Folks Furniture, we have a full range of carefully specialised mattresses to suit all of our beds.  mattress
