How to design a bedroom for a secondary school age child

If your child is about to move on to the next stage in their education, and is starting a secondary school, it may be time to think about how their bedroom can best support their needs and studies.

Firstly, it’s important to consider the room scheme itself.

Your near-teen is likely to have strong opinions over elements such as colour and overall scheme.

Take a look on platforms like Pinterest and Instagram to research their likes, and set up a shared mood board to collate all of your information in one place.

Next, consider the function of the room.

Think about what you need the room to do and be for your child. – Inevitably they’ll need a bed, and a study space, as well as storage for clothes. Just as importantly, you could also consider a chill out zone where they can enjoy R&R and hobbies.

Once you know what you need the room to provide, you will have a rough idea of the space available for the bed.

Choosing a bed for a teen

If space allows, a small double bed allows for plenty of room for teens, creating a comfortable sleeping environment, whilst making them feel more grown up.

For those with smaller bedrooms, choosing a high sleeper loft bed with desk underneath might be the key to a multifunctional space. Select a storage desk with a futon on the other side, to give them that all important down time space.

Ensure they have space for studies

For those with enough space in the room for a separate study station, a desk with enough space to spread out on, and places for books, laptops and tablets is essential for a child about to embark on their secondary studies.

For older children who are into their more practical subjects such as art and design, sciences or resistant materials, a loft bed with full length desk underneath may be a good option as it allows for more room to leave things set up on. Add storage underneath the desk to make best use of the space.

Consider their tech

If a full room redesign is on the cards, it’s worth noting where the charging ports are for USB, and also plug sockets, before designing the position of the desk.

Recognising that secondary school age children often have a myriad of technology in their lives, it’s important to allow enough sockets for lamps as well as laptops and televisions.

Encourage their uniqueness

Allow them room to explore what makes them individual. This could be through a wall of posters an photos, to a pegboard of their favourite things. Magnetic paint and chalkboard paint, as well as fixed shelves are all ways of giving them the flexibility to curate their own collections to suit their own style and personality.
