As adults, many of us traditionally set ourselves resolutions to take on into the new year. These generally align with self-development and making positive changes to our lives.
New Year is a great opportunity to do the same for children and it can be a fantastic way to encourage them to set and work towards goals and good habits from an early age.
Here are 4 resolution ideas to help your children enter 2023 with some great intentions:
1. Keep your room clean and tidy
We say this with a little bated breath, but hear us out... Helping your child have a clear and uncluttered space is a great way to set a foundation for being neat and tidy in later life. Goal charts where they can tick off daily and weekly tasks in their rooms such as making their bed every morning and putting away toys can really help instil good habits and set expectations.
Make it simpler for them by setting up zones within your child’s room for certain items and adding easy storage features such as a roll out storage trundle or dedicated drawers.
Having space to roam free will give them the choice of any activity and can also help promote positive sleeping patterns; as we all know, a clutter-free space can really help create a relaxed environment.
2. Celebrate achievements
Encouraging a child to celebrate achievements motivates them to always do the very best they can. Whether it’s through tasty treats, perhaps an extra episode of their favourite television programme, or a special day out, having a reward system in their minds to work towards can
really assist them in their academic and personal development.
3. Ask for help
Asking for help is something we sometimes all struggle to do, even as adults, and it can be a difficult skill to develop. Children can sometimes find asking for help an emotional process and their own feelings can cause overwhelm, creating a barrier when it comes to communicating what they need from us.
Setting this as a new year’s resolution will spur your child to recognise when they need help and promotes a feeling of support.
Asking children how they are feeling about something can also influence them to ask for help when they need it.
4. Learn a new skill or hobby
Skills and hobbies are essential to your child’s overall development. Championing them to learn a new ability or become involved in a new pastime, whether it’s mental or physical, will help them find out what their passions are and what they are
good at.
New hobbies needn't be expensive, perhaps they enjoy cooking or baking and can get involved with meal prep, or maybe they're interested in languages, in which case an app can really help them learn and become immersed in a new culture.
Trying new things can also help children break out of their comfort zone. There are gentle ways of encouraging children to become comfortable with being in their growth zone, and one of them is by associating an enjoyable hobby with it. - We can't all be good at everything, and it's good for them to learn that learning a new skill takes time, effort and commitment.
We hope all of our little folk have a really fabulous start to 2023!
