As your little one grows up, they will learn to climb and need a bigger space for themselves. For most children this happens at around the age of two and three years old, but there is no hard and fast rule. If you're going through the transition and would like advice, here are some tips that were shared with us by a childcare provider.
Build Excitement
Moving into a big bed is a huge step for a child, so it's natural that they will have some nerves. What you can do to help is make it seem like an exciting adventure, decorate their bed, and make it comfortable and a place that they will enjoy spending time. You can also build up their enthusiasm by expressing how proud you are.
A Reward Chart
You also might find a reward chart helpful to log how many sleeps they do. This will help you both see the progress they have made and encourage your child to use the bed.
Set Up
Consider letting your child set it up the way they want. This will make sure that they feel comfortable and happy going into their new bed.
A Gradual Move
If you have the space and can have both in their room at the same time, let your child test out their bed and slowly work towards sleeping in it for the first time. They might nap in their big bed occasionally and switch between the two until they are fully happy with the move.
Getting In
Getting in can be tricky so it's important that the bed you choose for your child is of an appropriate size. Also testing the bed as suggested above can help your child practise getting in and out themselves.
The decision to introduce a big bed should be based on what feels right to you and your child. They should of course be emotionally ready, as well as physically so you know that they can get in and out of their bed safely.
