When it comes to buying a bunk bed, there are a few key factors to research to ensure that you have a high quality and versatile bunk that meets your family's requirements.
Here are the top things to consider when buying a bunk bed:
- Safety First
- Guardrails: Top bunk should have rails on all sides with good quality fittings
- Mattress: ‘High bed’ safety mattresses should be used for the top bunk. These are 15cm (but find one with the high specification so that your child’s sleep isn’t compromised!)
- Ladder/Stairs: Look for child-friendly steps that are a good size to make an easy climb
- Compliance: Ensure the bed meets British Safety Standards for bunk beds (BS EN 747).
- Age Suitability: Top bunk is recommended for children aged six plus, while the bottom bunk suits from around age three.
- Materials & Build Quality
- Solid HARD wood versus soft wood: Opt for bunk bed frames made from durable, longer lasting materials like Beech or Oak for longevity instead of softwoods like Pine, or equivalents like MDF. Hardwoods not only last a lot longer but can also be painted a lot more easily (and the paint won’t chip off as easily).
- Proper Joints: Beds and bunks that are made from proper joints, such as mortice and tenon (instead of lots of flimsy dowel and glued joints), will last a whole lot longer and be a lot more robust. Investing in traditionally made furniture with proper joints is important for beds that stand the test of time.
- Non-Toxic Finishes: This is especially important for children’s beds and furniture. Check for British Safety Standard BS EN 71 Part 3.
- Room Size & Layout
- Measure Everything: Ceiling height, floor space, ladder clearance, and mattress thickness all matter. Consider where doors and windows are located, and ensure that the bunk isn’t too close to them.
- Split Options: It is a good idea to look for bunk beds that convert into two singles. This makes them ideal beds for growing families. They’re versatile beds that can be used in a variety of spaces from guest rooms, to air b’n’b and kids rooms.
- Functionality & Features
- Storage Integration: Look for underbed storage trundles or sleepover trundles that can be rolled out and used as a spare bed for guests.
- Convertible Designs: For older children who require multifunctional bedrooms in which to reside, look for good quality L-shaped bunks, triple sleepers, or loft beds with desks, gaming areas and day beds underneath.
5. Style & Aesthetic
- Choose a design that complements your interior, whether that’s playful, minimalistic or more traditional. Choosing a timeless design that isn’t too themed will ensure that the bunk bed can be used in different rooms as tastes change.
- Consider finishes that match your room’s palette and mood. Look for versatile neutrals that can be either paired with bolder hues or act as part of a tonal palette.
- Ease of Assembly
- Look for brands offering clear instructions, and reliable customer support that you are able to speak to on the phone. It is also worth calling up in advance with any queries about the bunk bed too.
