Why we love mid-century modern style for kids' rooms

Mid Century Modern style has been making its way up the design ladder for a number of years now. More recently, it’s become a fast-growing trend in kid’s room designs too.

But what is Mid Century Modern (MCM) style and why do we think it’s so great for kids’ rooms?

Essentially, it’s a style movement that describes the furniture aesthetic of the mid twentieth century. – Mostly using materials Teak, fiberglass, plywood and birch. With a shared style of clean lines, functionality and curved forms, this design style is perfect for Minimalist fans and also those who love a more Eclectic scheme. If you’re lucky, you might find the odd MCM or retro piece in second hand stores, house clearance shops and even at the car boot, but there are also other ways to get the look without having to source too many authentic items.

Furniture with rounded edges and corners is not only easy on the eye, but also creates a safe and cosy looking aesthetic, so it’s an ideal style choice for little ones.

So, without further ado, here are our Top 5 ways to inject a little MCM interior design into your kids bedroom:

  1. Timeless, iconic and with a warmth, wooden furniture will help you get that retro feeling into their space. Whether it’s a wooden bookcase, an exposed Beech bed or a vintage bedside, hints of wood can help a room feel warm and welcoming.

  1. Use Scandinavian design references, as this look shares very similar aesthetics. – Pared back furniture with clean lines and slim legs can help achieve this style, along with layering textures when it comes to bedding.

  1. Use wall panelling to create a modern yet retro 1970’s feel. If panelling feels like a DIY-step too far, consider choosing a panelled effect wallpaper instead. Though it’s inspired by MCM, it also has a intensely timeless appeal, making it a hugely transitional option.

  1. Bring bold primary colour pops into the space. This makes MCM styling ideal for a young child’s room. Frame up colourful pages from their favourite book, or choose a colourful desk lamp to make those hits of zesty colour really matter. Select Blue, Red and Yellow for a true retro vibe.

  1. Mis-match their bedroom. To create interesting contrasts and juxtapositions, try pairing a retro styled bed with an industrial locker style cupboard, or even some reclaimed scaffolding board shelves for the wall. It’s these unexpected and effortless combinations that create the joy of MCM design.
