Our guide to buying loft beds with desks for older children

When it comes to kitting out an older child’s bedroom, there are many things to consider before making the investment into beds, furniture and the like.

One of the first things to think about is how the space needs to function, and if there’s one thing that parents of older children are usually looking for, it’s a way to create an inspirational space that will encourage their (not so little) ones to love and explore their studies.

The main hero of such a  space is usually a sturdy desk. - But what if you just don’t have oodles of room for a whizzy work space amidst their bed, storage and all the other kit and caboodle of tween living?

It may be time to consider a loft bed with desk to create a serious study station, that’ll serve them for light homework, coursework and beyond.

A loft bed with desk underneath, is essentially a bunk bed on stilts. – Imagine the top bunk only, with the bottom bunk replaced by a desk and/or other furniture.

What a high sleeper with desk under allows for is:

  • A zoned, permanent work space where they can go to concentrate and study. No more kitchen-table-come-art-project-table-come-maths-homework-station. Once they have their inspirational study space set up, they won’t be wanting to stray!
  • It alleviates floor space in the rest of the room. This is perfect for more compact bedrooms, or rooms that need lots of storage in them.
  • It separates sleep from study. – For a loft bed with desk, having the bed atop means that there’s an automatic separation from the study area. This is a really good idea for instilling mindful habits, and for encouraging beds for sleeping only, and study spaces for studying only.

So, maybe you’ve decided that a loft bed with desk might be just the thing that your junior or secondary school aged child needs to help focus their mind?

The next task is to consider the type of desk that they’ll need.

This type of high sleeper bed has a built in desk with storage underneath (as well as sleep and chill out options too!), but the beauty with this version is that you can choose your desk layout. – At either end of the bed underneath, or maybe even attached to the outside of the loft bed frame if room space allows. With each option, the desk comes with built in shelf storage underneath a decent work top, for all those study notes, folders and textbooks. – (In theory) somewhere to tidy away all the work at the end of the day!

Loft bed with full length desk

There’s no beating around the bush when it comes to the biggest of the desks here. These loft beds have built in desks underneath, and they use the full length of the bed to create a wonderfully large desk space on which to spread out. This type of loft bed with desk is just perfect for those into big practical projects, art works, or just for those who like to spread out their notes! Lack of space would certainly not be a decent excuse here!

This variation of loft bed with desk is one of the most popular designs out there. It combines a beautifully curved corner desk with other furniture options that all fit neatly within the space under the bed. The corner desk provides a deep, yet space saving work station that can be affixed to either end of the high sleeper bed, and looks really gorgeous too.

Loft bed with free standing desk

For some children and teenagers, the ability to have an independent desk which can be moved around to anywhere in the room (or even into a different room entirely, of course!) is ideal. This type of loft bed with desk is particularly well suited to those families who perhaps move house fairly frequently, as the freestanding desk element provides a multitude of options when it comes to setting up their study space. It’s also a really great idea for those who aren’t quite sure about the commitment of opting for a fixed desk.

We get asked a lot of questions about high sleeper beds with desks, so we’ve pulled some of our top FAQ’s together:

Is the space underneath the bed really big enough for sitting at a desk?

Absolutely! We test all of our loft beds to ensure that the dimensions all work for every day life, and we use standard height chairs to ensure that our desks are all fit for purpose.

Do you have any ideas for brightening the space underneath the bed when they’re working?

We would recommend ensuring a good source of natural light (near a window or door), and also using child-safe desk lamps to create some task lighting, just for them. Lots of homework is completed in the evenings and so good lighting is a necessity.

How can I create an inspiring desk space underneath the loft bed?

We wholly recommend using the wall adjacent to the desk to create a zoned area. You could paint a colour directly above the desk, and then use it as a back board for adding inspirational quotes, posters and art.

Or, add a pinboard above the desk for a more traditional look.

You could add a clock above the desk for a trendy update, but also to help your little ones to keep track of time - especially handy when practising for those timed essays!

What is the best material for a loft bed with desk?

There are so many options on the market, but in general, we’d always recommend bed frames made from solid hardwoods. This means that the loft bed is likely to last a lot longer than those made from a soft, knotty wood such as pine (which is also likely to dent with lots of use).
