Kids’ chair beds and how they’re one of the best sleepover solutions for a child's room

When is a chair not a chair? When it’s a bed, of course! Fold out futons or chair beds - whatever you like to call them, they're often overlooked but we reckon they're one of the most useful pieces of furniture you can buy for a child's bedroom, and for a family room, play room, office... The possibilities!

Otherwise known as a rather handy fold out futon, childrens‘ chair beds are space saving, nifty numbers that provide a cosy perch that then unfolds into a bed for the night in an instant. – Perfect for guest beds and last minute sleepover spaces.

Space saving, extra sleepover space for guests, and a useful chair to-boot. What’s not to love about these whizz-kids?

They’re also great for adding a pop of personality by an injection of colour into a room. Opt for colourful versions to instantly refresh a kids room and give them a space to chill out.

Fold out futon chairs are often purchased independently by those looking for quick sleepover beds, but they also are often found as options underneath high sleeper beds to create a lounging area in multifunctional childrens bedrooms.

But with so many children’s futons and chair beds on the market, how do you know what to look out for when it comes to finding those futons with the best quality?

5 things to look out for when it comes to investing in a new fold out futon or kids chair bed:

1. Cover quality. Look for hardwearing twill cotton covers with covered fabric buttons that will last. Easy to keep clean but that are made to withstand lots of use.

2. Comfortable mattress. Something that’ll be firm to sleep on and cosy for sitting and reading or gaming. Look for futon chairs with a specified sleeping mattress (not just a piece of unsupportive foam which may be ok for occasional seating, but when it comes to getting a decent night’s kip the cousin might want something a little more comfortable!)

3. Easy manoeuvrability. Seek out childrens chair beds with easy use, single action mechanisms. In other words, chairs that fold out into beds with one movement. – You don’t want to be faffing around with nuts and bolts for a non-permanent sleepover bed, or if you're a parent with a little one who needs you with them on occasion at night.

4. Great design. If it’s a chair bed or fold out guest bed or futon that is going to live in a shared family space, or perhaps a play room or office, it’s a good idea to opt for a version that’s smart looking and which transitions easily into a grown up interior room.

 5. Proper frames. Not just any chair frame of course. Opting for solid hardwood frames will mean that the chair bed will last through the years, and will also make the whole bed stronger.
