Over the last six months, we have seen a shift over to traditional interiors. From panelled walls, to classical wallpaper designs, and bobbin style wood work and accessories. A nod to the past is a lovely way of keeping a bedroom interior timeless and classic, and by mixing it up with more contemporary elements, the end result is often unique and homely.
Here are 7 ways to create a timeless touch of tradition in your child’s bedroom;
Stick to classic prints and textiles
Find fabrics with traditional prints such as ginghams, toiles, stripes and florals for bedding, cushions and curtains. These cosy designs rarely go out of fashion, and can help retain a traditional feel to the space. Avoid motifs that can date an interior, as they move in and out of fashion with the trends.
Select heritage colour palettes
When decorating with tradition in mind, we recommend sticking to muted, heritage and period colours. Warm neutrals pair beautifully with deeper tones for a pop of colour. Tonal palettes give a particularly luxurious and serene feel, especially when created using different shades of the same colours.
Choose beds crafted with time honoured techniques
Selecting children’s beds made from solid and sturdy timbers, and designed with safety and quality in mind will highlight traditional craftsmanship. Seek out properly made beds with mortice and tenon joints, ones that will stand the test of time, and up to the hurly-burly of life with children!
Source vintage, one-off furniture pieces
We realise that as a children’s bedroom brand, it might sound a little odd for us to advocate finding older pieces, but we truly believe that the magic with interior design, is in combining old with new. A new bed and mattress will ensure that your child is safe and secure as they sleep, and combining these with a one-off vintage or antique desk, chair or other piece of storage allows a room to be personalised. Unique furniture pieces with age can help add character and a sense of history and nostalgia to a room. Pair with other, more modern furniture for a mis-matched, relaxed and effortless style. Scour your local preloved, charity and house clearance shops for bargain furniture that can be upcycled to match your décor.
Panel the walls
Walls with panelling are a lovely way to add a little interest as well as making a bedroom look more traditional. Choose anything from picture rails, dado rails, tongue and groove panelling through to more Georgian and Edwardian styles. Paint all the woodwork the same colour for a contemporary feel, and to prevent the room from looking old fashioned.
Beds with detail
If you are looking to create a classic style kids’ room, avoid ‘panel style’ beds. Instead, seek out wooden beds with features such as spindles, elegantly turned legs, router edges or tongue and groove ends. These small but important details can really enhance the look and feel of a bedroom and will give it a timeless quality.
Frame up or style family heirlooms
Whether it’s a painting or an old teddy, family heirlooms are a lovely way to bring a personal touch of history to your child’s room. Sit precious teddy’s high up on a display shelf, or frame up old postcards and paintings and display as part of a gallery wall. Family heirlooms are a lovely way to honour past relatives, and create a wonderful talking point for little ones too.
