How to create a Winter Wonderland Christmas

If you’d like to decorate your little ones’ bedroom for Christmas, but would love a more subtle, wintery theme that can be left up for a while after, then a winter wonderland set up might be for you.

Christmas decoration needn’t necessarily mean gaudiness, glitter and tinsel everywhere. You can create a subtle, Scandi vibe that fits in with any ‘grown up’ interior schemes just with a little paint and a few homely decorations as a finishing touch. By keeping the palette subtle, it keeps things gender neutral too – ideal for siblings who share or cousins who might be coming to stay.

MOOD BOARD

Here are our top tips to create a Scandi winter wonderland scheme in your child’s room:

  1. Create a modern tree mural with masking tape and paint testers

This might sound like a lot of work, but it’s fairly inexpensive and makes a big impact on the room.

Firstly, you’ll need a neutral base for this so if you don’t already have one, we would recommend a warm neutral such as Valspar’s Quill. You will need to let this dry for at least 24 hours before attempting to mural over the top.

Using a level and pencil, draw on triangle shapes at varying heights. Ideally these need to be at least 1 foot above the height of your bed to give the best illusion of a forest.

Overlap some of the triangles, and change the widths and heights too. This will create your base layer. You will need to decide which trees are ‘in front’ and which are behind (select these randomly for a more effortless look).

Pick your colours. For our mural we chose a variety of Greens, all with quite a warm tone to them. - This is a great way to use up those tester pots!

Carefully mask up against the lines, so that you know where to paint, and using a mini roller, carefully paint slightly over the edge of the tape.

For a random look, try not to be too symmetrical with your use of colour. We’d recommend using between 3-5 different greens depending upon the size of the wall.

Once dry, if you’d also like some shaped trees, use an artist’s paint brush to add on stylised and detailed trees. Again, pick a variety of shapes and draw them on lightly in pencil before applying paint. Use a plumb line if you’d like straight(ish!) tree trunks.

We’d recommend keeping your darkest green for applying these stylised trees, so that they stand out against the triangular tree backdrop.

If you have lots of space left above your trees, why not add a few stars above too for a magical feel.

Try not to rush. – The paint will apply better if you leave proper drying time in between applications and layers.

  1. Use some faux Christmas foliage to make a garland. This could be wrapped onto a curtain pole, rested on top of a fireplace or hung like bunting from the ceiling.

foliage and baubles

  1. Pull your colour scheme through using (shatterproof) baubles in the same colour palette, and intertwine these into the foliage.

  1. Add layers to your bed with cosy blankets and cushions in Greens. Try to tonally match one or two of the paint colours in the mural. We also introduced an Indigo blue colour to complement the Green of the mural.

cushions

Top tip: Pick your extra cushions and blankets before choosing any paint testers, as you can then tie the testers in to match the linen.

  1. If you have any paint testers left, why not create your own wrapping paper and wrap some empty boxes for a cheap yet effective Christmas finishing touch!
