High rise loft beds for children: The low-down

In this blog post we explain a little more about versatile high beds (loft beds) for kids, and hopefully help answer some of your own questions along the way.

Children’s high sleeper beds (otherwise known as loft beds) are a fabulous sleep, storage, study and lounging solution for any child. Generally speaking, a high bed is anything that involves sleeping high up with furniture that slots in underneath.

Here’s a little bit about our favourite high sleeper bed configurations, and why ...

High sleeper with futon

Often referred to as a loft bed with futon, these super-beds are a timeless classic. They have the ease and comfort of a high sleeper platform (generally speaking these are the same height as top bunk bed), but with the versatility of a fold out futon chair-bed underneath. A high sleeper bed with futon is one of the best solutions for extra guests and sleepovers, as the futon needn’t take up much floor space in the bedroom. They can also be handily moved elsewhere in the home – They look just as smart in an office space or family room too.

Top tip: Though futons are designed primarily for occasional sleeping, it’s always a good idea to look for the highest spec possible. Attention to detail such as hand tufted buttons and thick covers are usually great indicators that a futon is good quality and that it has been well made.

Why we love high beds with futons:

They’re super versatile (they provide both a chair and sleep solution in one)

They’re nice and compact (so they save on precious playing space)

They’re easy to unfold from chair to bed (ours folds flat in one swift movement)

High sleeper with desk and futon

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?! But yes, there are such things – and what nifty sleep and study stations they make, too … From loft beds with corner desks and futons, to high sleeper beds with storage desks and futons, there are a variety of options when it comes to decking out their bedroom with everything they need.

A high sleeper with futon and desk is the ultimate superhero when it comes to saving space in their bedroom because both the futon (as a chair) and desk can slot directly underneath the loft bed, thus not needing to take up any further space in the bedroom.

We love this option because it offers a great balance of study and rest. – Somewhere to get some serious homework done in a dedicated zone, but also an area just for relaxation, too.

If you want them to be serious about their studies, you might want to consider a high sleeper with desk underneath (also sometimes referred to as a cabin bed with desk).

We’ve already covered smaller desks that can slot in underneath a high sleeping platform, but there are also full length desks available that run all the way along the length of the bed underneath.

The benefit of long, full length desks that are built in underneath the loft bed is that they provide a larger tabletop on which to spread out with books and notes, or even crafts. – They’d even make a great working solution for a multifunctional study or guest room too.

High sleeper bed with sofa

A bed with sofa underneath immediately elevates a childs’ bedroom from sleep space to living room. Ideal for older children in particular, a high sleeper with sofa underneath (sometimes known as a cabin bed with sofa) offers a decent space to relax and lounge during the day. – Somewhere to chill, read books and game, and then by night it can be used as a sleepover bed. – Particularly if it’s a sofa with a properly sprung mattress.

Top tip: Look for sofa’s that are completely independent of the high sleeper loft bed frame. Or, in other words, beds with sofas that can be moved around anywhere in the room (not built into the high sleeper bed frame). This will provide greater longevity and will mean that the sofa can be moved into other rooms such as a study, office or play room.

For bedrooms with a little more room for manoeuvre, a high sleeper with sofa bed and desk may be just the answer. A perfect balance of study and sleepover space, this combination of furniture can be moved around to suit, but is usually configured as a sofa bed running along underneath, at ninety degrees to the upper high sleeper platform.

Top tips when buying a high sleeper with desk and sofa bed:

Look for options with freestanding furniture that can be moved around anywhere in the room or house, to enable future switch arounds.

Check the mattress that is being supplied with the sofa bed. Proper, sprung mattresses will provide the best support for a good nights’ sleep and will stand the test of time.

High sleeper beds are usually ideal for one child, however options with extra, proper full specification beds underneath are perfect for shared bedrooms.

Loft beds with single beds underneath are a little bit like bunk beds, but they have greater versatility because the single bed is completely standalone. This means that it can be positioned anywhere else in the bedroom, or even in the house for that matter – making these beds the perfect candidates for guest rooms at a later date.

To make best use of all the width under the high sleeper bed, the addition of a small double bed sitting underneath the loft bed provides the ideal sleep station for those who need that extra bit of wiggle room. Again, similarly to the single bed option detailed above, these double beds can be moved into other bedrooms at a later date.

Why we love kids loft beds with double beds under:

They provide lots of space for children who like to spread out

They are great for shared spaces and bigger bedrooms

It includes two full specification beds for long lasting, restful nights

High sleeper beds with storage

From high sleeper beds with bookcases to storage desks underneath, there’s sure to be a storage solution for any little folks’ room.

Our top tips for buying childrens’ high sleeper beds:

Make a list of needs and wants – what do you need the bed to have? Perhaps it’s a desk for studies, or maybe it’s all about R&R for your little one.

Measure your space – The best way to do this is to use a good old fashioned tape measure, and then to draw out the space scale 1:100 on grid paper. Create mini furniture icons that you can move around in the space to see which layout will best suit the bedroom

Do some research – Now that you know what you’re looking for, take some time to have a look at what’s on the market.

Shortlist your favourites – A good way of doing this Is to create a list of pro’s and cons. Ensure that you check out a company’s credentials, and things like sourcing and safety standards before parting with any cash.

Place your order – You might be shopping online, but if you want a sure-fire way of trusting that a company knows their day bed from their high sleeper, we’d always recommend a quick call. That way, you’ll be reassured and can be taken through the order process if needs be. – It’s a big decision and sometimes it helps just to chat it through with the experts.

Prepare the bedroom – Once you’ve placed the order for their new bed, start to prepare the space. – You’ll thank us for this later (there’s nothing worse than getting paint sprays on brand new furniture!)
