Get Sleepover Savvy

Sleepovers - The magical nights where giggles echo through pillow dens, secrets are shared under cosy blankets, and films are watched with yummy midnight snacks… Whether you’re hosting a sleepover for your own child, or helping them prepare for one at a friend’s house, let’s unlock the secrets of the best sleepovers.

Is your child ready for a sleepover?

Readiness for a sleepover varies from child to child. Some little adventurers embrace it as an exciting quest, while others might feel a bit hesitant. If your child handles travel well and adapts to sleeping in different beds, they’re likely ready. However, if social anxiety creeps in, it’s okay to wait until they’re just that little bit older.

Encourage an adventurous mindset. Frame the sleepover as a special experience—a chance to create memories, share stories, and spend time with friends.

Before the Sleepover

Communication is key! If the friendship is a new one, it’s a good idea to have a chat or share a coffee with the parents, to ensure that you feel comfortable with your child staying in their home.

Ensure that you alert them to any allergies and preferences before the night. Any habits or bedtime rituals that your child does at home, can be passed on to the hosts.

Pack the Essentials: Help your child pack their overnight bag. Pyjamas, toothbrush and toothpaste, extra undies and maybe some bedding, depending on what is available at the host’s home. A sleeping bag can add an extra element of fun and adventure to the event!

During the Sleepover

Set Boundaries: Discuss rules with your child beforehand. What’s okay and what’s not? Set the expectations, and make sure that they know where the bathroom is, and where you’ll be if they need you.

Playtime Galore: Most kids revel in the extra playtime. Board games, pillow fights, and storytelling—let their imaginations run wild! Have a few extra games up your sleeve in case boredom sets in!

Create a feast of dreams! A midnight snack platter is always a great idea. Fill a grazing board with a mixture of food, and let them enjoy in front of a film.

After the Sleepover

Reflect and Share: In the morning, ask the children what they enjoyed the most, and whether they managed to enjoy any sleep!

Say Their Thank You’s: Teach your child the art of gratitude. A simple thank you note or card goes a long way.

Rest and Recuperate: Sleepovers can be super fun, but they may also disrupt sleep routines. Let your child rest and recharge afterwards, with an unplanned ‘free play’ day to follow.

Sleepover FAQ’s…

What child should my child be to have a sleepover?

This very much depends on the child, but generally from around age 7, a child could be ready to host a friend or two.

What is the best bed for a sleepover?

Futons or Sofa Beds:

Futons and sofa beds are versatile choices. During the day, they function as seating, and at night, they transform into a comfortable sleeping surface. Plus, they’re space-saving, which is perfect for sleepovers in smaller rooms. Just unfold, add some cosy bedding, et voilà—an instant sleepover spot!

Trundle Beds:

Trundle beds are like the magical hidden beds of the sleepover world. They consist of a main single or small double bed with a smaller bed (trundle) tucked underneath. When friends arrive, simply roll out the trundle, and you’ve got an extra sleeping space. It’s like having a sleepover secret weapon!

Bunk Beds:

Bunk beds are classic sleepover champions. They maximize vertical space, leaving more floor area for playtime shenanigans. Plus, kids adore climbing up to their comfy den in the stars.

Daybeds with Trundles:

Daybeds are stylish and functional. During the day, they serve as sofa style seating with the addition of scatter cushions, and at night, add a duvet to the day bed, and the trundle also pops out to accommodate guests.

Remember, the best bed type depends on the available space, the number of guests, and your child’s preferences. And don’t forget the essential sleepover accessories: cosy blankets, films and games, and of course, midnight snacks!

Happy sleepovers! x
