Different ways to use a mid sleeper bed to save space in compact kids’ rooms

Small children’s rooms can sometimes be a bit of a blessing in disguise. Whilst most of us would always love a little extra wiggle room, the on-going battle of having more space and then filling it up fast, is one that appears never ending. – Anything with a surface seems to be filled. – From chairs to chests of drawers, if there’s a horizontal space that’s clutter-free, it’ll be soon covered in no time at all!

But what if your child’s bedroom is super small, to the point where storage is an issue?

If you have just enough space for a full-size single bed, (but not much room to swing a cat around after), then a kids mid sleeper bed could well be the answer to your space and storage woes.

Mid sleeper (cabin) beds for children, are beds that are raised up just high enough off the floor to enable furniture items to be slotted in underneath. This means that you don’t need to find more floor space for furniture because you can make use of the space under the bed instead.

This also makes them the perfect candidate for those who like to keep things neat, in order, and tidied fully away at the end of the day.

So, how do you know which set up to select for your mid sleeper bed?

Mid sleeper beds come with a wide variety of furniture options underneath (many including roll out pieces with lockable wheels).

So, the first thing to do is to write a list (in priority order) of all the requirements for your little ones’ room.

For example, if sleep and storage are top of your agenda, list those. Maybe a sleepover option is something important to you if your child has a sibling, cousin or friend that they like to share their space with from time to time.

For children who are regularly bringing home homework, perhaps a mid sleeper bed with a desk will be top of the list.

Desks that roll in and out easily from under the bed are a really great way of not only saving space, but also changing up the setting easily and quickly because you can move them around the room, thus changing their vista. – A great way of continuing to inspire their studies, and offers a fabulous way to change up the function of their room quickly and pretty effortlessly too.

TOP TIP >> When searching for mid sleeper with desk beds, look for roll out desk and furniture with multidirectional castors. This means that they will be able to roll out more easily, without getting stuck on carpets. Also ensure that you can lock the wheels in position to prevent any accidents.

If your priority is to create an adaptable bedroom for your child, look for mid sleeper bed options that allow you to position the furniture any which way under the bed. Mid sleepers often work best when positioned against the wall, however if space allows, having the head end against the wall, with 360 degree access all around, can make for an exciting set up that allows for endless play and den ideas underneath too.

Of course, as long as they are independent furniture pieces and floor space allows, there’s nothing to stop you from setting storage furniture up against the walls and using any space underneath the bed for camping out!

Sleeping in a mid sleeper bed is pretty special. Up high enough to feel like they’re King or Queen of the castle, yet not too high for littlies. That said, a mid sleeper is still classified as a raised/high bed, and so for the purposes of safety, it’s important to select the correct mattress specification.

For mid sleeper beds, we’d always recommend opting for a raised bed mattress. This is essentially a slightly thinner version of a regular mattress, and ensures that there is no concern of the child rolling out of bed (as the mattress height is a fair amount lower than the top of the side rail).

TOP TIP >> When searching for high bed or raised bed mattresses, look for those that don’t scrimp on specification. High quality mattresses for little ones are essential, and we wholly recommend sprung mattresses as they’re so responsive.
