With many of us turning to home renovations instead of making house moves, we’re seeking functional furniture that saves space more so now than ever before.
With the amount of bits and bobs that children accumulate, ensuring that their bedroom space is optimized is super important; especially when it comes to more compact bedrooms.
So, what type of kids furniture saves the most space in a bedroom, and how can you give the impression of larger, light and airy rooms that work hard to control the clutter?
Here are our top 7 tips to save space in your kids’ room:
1. Use the space under the bed. For a single bed or day bed style, this could involve storage drawers that pull or roll out from under the bed.
Investing in a bed with a roll out trundle is a bit of a no-brainer when it comes to saving space. Contrary to popular belief, a trundle isn’t just all about the sleepovers. By looking for a trundle that can be either a giant drawer or a sleepover space, you’re adding longevity and flexibility to your child’s bedroom to fit their changing demands as they grow.
Use the roll out trundle drawer to store anything, from spare bedding through to toy collections and even clothes, and if you want to turn it into an instant sleepover bed, simply pop in a comfy mattress (just ensure that you remove any toys before attempting to do this!)
2. If your child is 6+ then a mid sleeper cabin bed works really hard when it comes to being multifunctional and saving space. With just the single bed foot print taken up, invest in a mid sleeper with manoeuvrable storage and desks underneath to make the most of the space under the bed. This also means that any piece can be moved into another room, if they’re into their under-the-bed den building!
From roll out desks, to chests of drawers and bookcases to help keep the clutter at bay, there is almost endless opportunity for different layouts and options, making a mid sleeper the perfect solution for flexibility. An added benefit of this bed type, is that it’s ideal for slightly younger children who aren’t quite ready for the heights of a bunk or high sleeper.
3. Look for bunks and high sleeper beds with fixed, upright ladders. These have no pitches on them and instead are fitted horizontally to the side of the bed. This really helps save space in a bedroom and allows easy access to underbed storage too.
4. When it comes to high beds, consider investing in a hook on shelf as a replacement bedside. These slot simply onto the side rail of a high bed or bunk, and ensure that there is space for a favourite book, toy or cup of water; all the overnight necessities. This negates the need for extra shelving which children on a top bunk could easily bump heads on during the night.
5. For older children, a high sleeper is the best way to fully maximise the footprint of a child’s bedroom. These are the height of a bunk bed so are raised fully off the ground, and provide space underneath for any other furniture, including storage desks, fold out futons, day beds and storage options too. Before embarking on high sleeper bed research, it is worth thinking about the priorities for the room. – What you need their bed to do. Perhaps a study space is becoming increasingly important, or maybe there is a lack of space in the bedroom for storage, in which case, this is likely to be important.
6. Fold out sleepover beds such as futon chair beds are a really popular way to save space. They double up as a comfy chair by day, and fold out flat with one pull, to form a super cosy temporary bed solution by night. They are really useful for a variety of rooms as well as the kids’ bedroom, including guest rooms, spare seating in offices or play rooms and even family rooms too. Look for futons that have been made using high quality materials, with solid bases and tufted twill covers, as this will ensure longevity.
7. Last but not least, as well as being a great idea for a child’s room, a day bed is a super option for a guest room, family room or office space. Dress it up as a sofa by day, by adding scatter cushions along the back, and creating a haven for sharing a good book or watching a film, and by night, convert it into a useful bed. Roll out the sleepover trundle from underneath the bed to create a second sleepover space, and once the sleepover is finished, tuck it back underneath again!
Happy space saving!
