5 ways to restyle their room for autumn

Autumn is a prime time of year for a little interiors refresh as we focus on cosying up indoors for the longer evenings.

Here are 5 easy ways to change up your child's interior quickly and cost-effectively:

  1. Add a splash of Burnt Orange

An ideal pairing for white beds, grey beds and navy beds too, using Burnt Orange as a feature wall in a child’s bedroom is the perfect place to inject some warmth and liveliness into their bedroom.

With Orange tones inspired by nature at the forefront of current design trends, seek out hues such as Terracotta, Clay and Brick for an on trend, earthy palette such as Coral Curry by Valspar.

Top tip>> Unless you love the vibrancy of bold Satsuma, avoid anything too bright as it may become tricky to tie in coordinating accessories.

  1. Cosy up with added layers

Simply switching out a blanket or two is a quick (and cost effective) way of restyling for the season ahead.

For autumn, look for textures such as chunky knits, slub weaves and waffle woven textiles. Fringed blankets are another way of adding softness, too.

As well as adding texture, throws and blankets also help to pull in a splash of colour to an otherwise neutral room, and they’re a great way of changing up a colour palette in a more subtle way.

Top tip>> Pull a blanket all the way up to the pillow to act in place of a bedspread, or bunch it up and let it drape at the bottom of the bed for a stylish colour pop.

  1. Change the curtains

Opting for heavier and thicker fabric curtains will help frame the window, and create a cosy interior. Add curtains at the edges of the window to break the hard line, and you can even use them in addition to blinds as a soft drape.

If the rest of the room is quite plain and the windows are large, try adding a printed fabric at the window to add more interest and make a feature of the window.

Top tip >> If your aim is for the curtains to recede into the room design, choose curtains in the same colours or tones as the walls. This will pull the attention back to the interior of the room and away from the windows.

  1. Pull in some Tartan

Checks, ginghams and plaid prints are always a winner when it comes to creating a cosy autumn vibe. This look works especially well for more traditional style homes and interiors, and is the perfect way to add interest in a smart and more subtle way.

Top tip>> Start by adding in small dashes of tartan such as cushions or blankets, or even bunting. Too much can date an interior and make it also feel very grown up. The best part about tartans is that they’re timeless, so tartan cushions are the perfect candidate for cosying up the living or spare room next year!

  1. Add warmth with lights

Playing with light, colour and scale is something that you can get away with doing in a child’s room. A simple way of adding more mood and personality is by pulling in some ambient lighting.

If your child’s room has a scheme, try to find lights that coordinate with the subject matter or theme. For example, this dinosaur light adds a fun element and draws attention to the shelves.

Strings of lights aren’t just for Christmas… Perfect for darker days and after school chill time, you can buy lights with batteries as well as plugs; save on energy and hang them up high too.
